Fine handcrafted kaleidoscopes since 1980
Cozy Baker, world renowned kaleidoscope expert, referred to the Chesniks in her book, Kaleidoscope Artistry, as among the first and finest artists to popularize the wheeled kaleidoscope, and collectors worldwide agree.
Janice and Ray Chesnik founded Chesnik Scopes in 1980, and Janice's son, Jon Greene, joined them in 1990, handcrafting a full line of brass- and chrome-plated kaleidoscopes using a variety of beautiful materials in their wheels which are created using stained glass techniques. Each kaleidoscope features a magnifying lens and front-sirface mirrors for the clearest optics.
In 2007, Jon took over the business, allowing his folks to enjoy their much deserved semi-retirement. In 2010, Jon and his wife Suzanne, opened their own gallery, Cape Kaleidoscopes, on Cape Cod in Mashpee, Mass. Jon is the Artist-in-Residence, and he can often be seen creating the fascinating wheels of his kaleidoscopes right at the front window for people to watch.
Otherwise, Jon works from his home studio filling orders made by his 120+ wholesale accounts located throughout the U.S., as well as in parts of Canada and Japan. He also fills several corporate orders each year. The creativity of Janice and Ray Chesnik still evident in Chesnik Scopes. They create the millefiore glass pieces featured in the Fiesta styles, and Janice also helps by supplying Jon with the mirror systems used in each style.
Every Chesnik Scope style is signed and dated by Jon, and comes with its own wooden base or pedestal. The brass-plated styles couldn’t be easier to care for, because they will never tarnish. These vibrant kaleidoscopes make ideal gifts for men as well as women, and are suitable for any occasion, particularly as corporate gifts. Chesnik Scopes are among the best-selling kaleido-scopes on the market, are available in a wide price range, and are truly collector pieces. They will provide the owner with many years of viewing enjoyment as “interactive art”.
